At the age of 7, he joined his family business as a young magician and entertained at parties around Calgary making rabbits appear and birds disappear like a seasoned pro. He retired from performing as a teenager, but helped his father nurture a publishing business for magic books and accessories. In 2000, Brian launched EDGE Publishing with The Black Chalice. Calgary author Marie Jakober had published elsewhere, but she trusted EDGE to bring this long-developing manuscript into the world. Her tale of magic and sorcery in the enchanted forests of medieval Germany put EDGE on the map and attracted readers around the world. From there, the company began to grow, publishing more books every year. In 2003, Hades acquired Edmonton-based Tesseract Books, a list that included 20 years of speculative fiction anthologies, including early works by Margaret Atwood and William Gibson.
